Teeth Cleaning & Whitening Q & A

What are teeth cleaning and whitening?

Teeth cleaning and whitening are two of the most common dental procedures.

Teeth cleaning

During professional teeth cleaning, your Main Street Dentistry provider removes plaque and tartar from beneath your gums and between your teeth.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening eliminates stains and discoloration from your tooth enamel. At Main Street Dentistry, the team offers take-home teeth whitening with custom whitening splints. Splints are custom mouthpieces that fit your teeth perfectly.

What does teeth cleaning involve?

At Main Street Dentistry, teeth cleaning is a multi-step process.

Step one - Oral exam

During an oral exam, your dentist uses a handheld mirror to observe your tongue, gums, cheeks, and teeth. If they uncover any signs of tooth decay or gum disease, they design a treatment plan that prevents these issues from progressing.

Step two - Removal of dental plaque and tartar

During plaque and tartar removal, your dentist uses a handheld tool called a scaler to remove build-up from around your teeth and gums. You might hear some scraping during this part of the procedure, but it’s nothing to worry about. If you experience dental anxiety, the team can administer pain management.

Step three - Teeth polishing and flossing

After cleaning your teeth, your provider flosses them to remove any remaining food particles and polishes them with gritty toothpaste. The gritty nature of the toothpaste helps cut through stains, ensuring your teeth remain shiny and white.

Step four - Fluoride treatment

If you regularly experience cavities, your dentist might prescribe fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a mineral found in most foods and many public water sources. When applied to your teeth, it strengthens the enamel, minimizing the risk of decay.

What does teeth whitening involve?

At Main Street Dentistry, the team offers take-home teeth whitening splints. If your dentist determines you qualify, they take impressions of your mouth and send them to a dental lab. The technicians at the lab use your impressions to make two plastic mouthpieces that fit snugly over your teeth.

When the lab completes your splints, you return to Main Street Dentistry and try them on. Your provider makes adjustments as necessary and instructs you on how to use them. The process is easy. Simply line the mouthpieces with a whitening solution and wear them for three to four hours whenever it works with your schedule.

After several weeks, you’ll notice a significant improvement in the color and appearance of your teeth.

How often should I schedule teeth cleaning and whitening?

At Main Street Dentistry, the team recommends scheduling teeth cleaning and whitening at least once every six months. Routine visits can alert you to potentially serious oral health problems, and ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy for years to come.
